Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona and his counterpart Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi today launched Air Zimbabwe’s daily flights to Mutare.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing domestic connectivity and bolster the tourism sector ahead of the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo.
The new service forms part of the airline’s turnaround plan, which focuses on expanding its route network and improving access to Zimbabwe’s key tourist destinations.
This temporary route will provide exhibitors, delegates and visitors with an efficient travel option to attend the expo and explore the scenic Eastern Highlands.
Grand Reef Aerodrome in Mutare recently underwent major rehabilitation and upgrades, which include runway strengthening, terminal improvements and safety enhancements, to ensure it can handle larger aircraft and increased passenger volumes expected during the expo.
The landmark 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo will be held from September 10 to 12 in Mutare under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development – Our Future”.
For the first time since its inception, Zimbabwe’s premier tourism showcase, renowned for drawing global buyers, investors and exhibitors, will be held in Mutare, marking a deliberate shift to expand tourism opportunities beyond traditional hubs.
The expo venue, Mutare Sports Club, has undergone extensive refurbishment, while feeder roads, the Mutare Flyover and other key infrastructure are also being upgraded.
Together with the transformation of the Grand Reef Aerodrome, these works form part of a broader Government effort to position Manicaland as a competitive tourism hub.
