MOZAMBIQUE has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the people of Zimbabwe by calling for the immediate, unconditional removal of economic sanctions affecting the country’s development.
In an address at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo said unilateral coercive measures violate the foundational principles of the UN Charter and penalise entire populations across the developing world.
He also underscored that restoring trust in the international order requires strict adherence to international law, mutual respect and non-interference in sovereign affairs.
“We oppose the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, which continue to penalise entire peoples,” he said.
“We wish to express our solidarity with the brotherly people of Zimbabwe and reiterate our position in favour of the unconditional lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwe and other countries.”
Such blockades and economic restrictions, President Chapo said, contradict the spirit of global multilateralism and undermine regional integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mozambique’s stance at the General Assembly reflects a long-standing commitment to SADC’s collective position against economic sanctions on Zimbabwe.
By linking Zimbabwe’s economic freedom to broader African development and global stability, the address served as a firm reminder that true multilateralism cannot exist while unilateral sanctions persist.
