THE newly appointed National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) board chairman, Dr Misheck Sibanda, is today expected to engage senior management of the parastatal before and also to be officially unveiled to the media at the company’s headquarters in Bulawayo.
The media briefing is scheduled to take place shortly after 9am.
As first reported by Zimpapers on Wednesday, Dr Sibanda — a former Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet — was appointed with effect from September 1, taking over from Advocate Mike Madiro.
He was formally introduced to the NRZ board and directors on August 27 by Mutapa Investment Fund chief executive officer, Dr John Mangudya, during a special board meeting held in Harare.
Dr Sibanda has since chaired his first full board meeting earlier this week in Harare, signalling the start of his tenure at the helm of the strategic parastatal.
His appointment is expected to inject renewed impetus into the parastatal’s turnaround programme, which is central to restoring NRZ’s role as the backbone of Zimbabwe’s transport and logistics sector.
Industry players and Government have consistently underscored the importance of a modern, efficient and well-managed rail system in driving industrialisation, lowering transport costs and positioning Zimbabwe as a regional trade hub in line with Vision 2030.
