THE Old Mutual National High Schools Quiz marks a significant milestone this year, with organisers, sponsors and learning institutions celebrating the 40th edition of the competition.

It is the longest running quiz competition in Zimbabwe.

The High Schools Quiz was first held in 1983.

With Old Mutual Zimbabwe as its anchor sponsor, and conducted in partnership with the Book of African Records, the High Schools Quiz presents an annual opportunity for learners, teachers and administrators to claim bragging rights.

The competition also ignites the passion for education.

It tests learners’ knowledge across subjects like mathematics, science, history, literature and current affairs.

Over the years, it has grown in leaps and bounds.

In 2022, there were 126 participating schools.

However, the number swelled to 430 schools in 2024.

It is believed that the involvement of Old Mutual in the competition provides learners with a solid foundation in financial literacy, while the Book of African Records ensures a Pan-African orientation.

This year, the finalists will have the opportunity to tour the Old Mutual head office, as well as Liberation City, which is home to the Museum of African Liberation and other attractions.

For this milestone anniversary, Old Mutual Zimbabwe has committed a host of prizes that will directly benefit not only the learners who will participate in the competition, but their educational institutions as well.

Among the prizes are a solar package for an administration block or computer laboratory; a borehole and water tank for school projects; computers and printers; and smartphones.

To ensure as many schools as possible participate in the 2025 Old Mutual National High Schools Quiz, a nationwide mobilisation programme is underway.

This is designed to empower learners, teachers and school administrators with the rules of the competition and its modalities.

Before the provincial finals are held, there will be celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the competition.

These will be held in conjunction with the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH).

Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Matabeleland South and Midlands will hold their finals on June 6.

Bulawayo, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Masvingo and Matabeleland North will hold theirs on June 29.

The national finals of the Old Mutual High Schools Quiz will be held on July 4.
