New pool board member speaks out

NEWLY appointed Zimbabwe Pool Association (ZIPA) board member responsible for marketing and sponsorship, Archie Scholtz is dreaming of taking Zimbabwe to the forthcoming All Africa Pool Association (AAPA) Hawley Cup contest.

Scholtz assumed his new role late last month.

“I’m happy that ZIPA noticed my ability to mobilise and gather resources as evidenced at the Queens International tournament that was held in December last year.

This was the biggest tournament held this far in Africa for individual players,” said Scholtz.

He added: “I’m still trying to find my footing. I’m working on setting up structures or sub committees to help my work. The biggest starting task at hand is to ensure Zimbabwe’s attendance at the All Africa Pool Association (AAPA) and Hawley Cup.”

The AAPA and Hawley Cup competition will be held from October 11-23.

Meanwhile, the newly established Bulawayo Elders Pool League has ushered in a new executive that will be chaired by one of the city’s renowned billiards players and benefactor Tongai Mukahiwa.

The league has 10 clubs and it was meant to accommodate players aged 40 and above, the feeling being that they have always found it difficult to match younger players’ cue stick skills pound for pound.

According to Scholtz who is one of the league’s organisers, he said they will work hand in glove with Tapera Shumbanhete and Mukahiwa will be deputised by John Mangore.

“We are happy to announce that the establishment of the inaugural Bulawayo Elders Pool League has also seen the ushering of an executive that will be led Tongai Mukahiwa who will have John Mangoye as his vice chairman.

Tafadzwa Muguyo was elected secretary-general.

We look forward to a fruitful league that will keep the elders entertained and occupied during their spare time,” said Scholtz.
The 10 clubs that have affiliated to the league so far are Queens Academy, Nketa 8, Dragons, Entumbane, Chillers, Skittle Palace, Raylton, Exchange, Marula and Nkulumane Police.
