A group of retired army Generals and liberation war veterans has declared support for Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, backing the proposed changes which are aimed at aligning Zimbabwe’s electoral processes with its long-term development goals.
The group also distanced itself from remarks attributed to Air Marshal Henry Muchena (Retired), who is reported to have opposed the Bill in a recent letter to Parliament.
Speaking at a press briefing in Harare on Saturday, Major-General Gibson Mashingaidze (Retired) said it was “unfortunate and regrettable” for Air Marshal Muchena to suggest he was representing the views of all retired senior military officers.
He said the group fully supports the position adopted at the 2024 ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference and reaffirmed at the last year’s conference in Mutare.
Among its key proposals, Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 seeks to realign electoral cycles to better fit the country’s development planning framework.
Proponents argue that synchronising political timelines with national development programmes will enhance policy continuity and implementation.
