GOVERNMENT officials have expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing road rehabilitation works in Matabeleland South, particularly along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge and Gwanda–Maphisa roads.

A high-level delegation toured the projects on Thursday to assess progress and ensure timely delivery.

The delegation is being led by Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco, who is representing Minister Felix Mhona.

He is accompanied by Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Engineer Joy Makumbe, Members of Parliament, including Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport chairperson Cde Tawanda Karikoga, Zinara CEO Mr Nkosinathi Ncube and journalists from various media organisations.

Minister Nguluvhe said the visit demonstrates Government’s shared commitment to improving connectivity, enhancing service delivery and unlocking economic opportunities for communities in the province.

He highlighted that the reconstruction of the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road was a critical national project that supports trade, movement and regional integration.

“Honourable Minister, this project has been stalling for some time,” said Minister Nguluvhe.

“It is our hope that your visit will facilitate the expeditious completion of this road.”

On the Gwanda–Maphisa Road project, Minister Nguluvhe said its completion will significantly improve access to healthcare, education and markets for rural communities by linking them directly to the provincial capital.

The delegation is also expected to tour the Maitengwe Border Post Road construction project on Friday.

The 1,5km stretch, which runs along the Plumtree–Maitengwe Border Post Road from Plumtree Town, is expected to ease congestion and boost trade once completed, as it links Zimbabwe directly with Botswana.

“Tomorrow, we conclude the tour with a visit to the Plumtree–Maitengwe Border Post Road project in Bulilima District,” said Minister Nguluvhe.

“This road is vital for cross-border connectivity and will play a key role in facilitating trade and movement between Zimbabwe and Botswana.”

He added that the tour reaffirms Government’s commitment to inclusive development and infrastructure-led growth.

“As a province, we remain dedicated to supporting these efforts and ensuring that every kilometre built brings us closer to Vision 2030, a modern, connected and prosperous Zimbabwe,” he said.

Deputy Minister Sacco said the ministry had embarked on several key projects this year to accelerate infrastructure development and improve road connectivity in line with Vision 2030.

“Of priority is the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2, which His Excellency, President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, extended until 2026,” he said.

“The ministry will also continue with the Road Development Programme, which includes completing the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge project this year.”

Other major projects under the programme include the upgrading of the Harare–Kanyemba Road and the rehabilitation of the Beitbridge–Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road, both of which are currently underway.

Deputy Minister Sacco emphasised that a well-maintained road network is central to economic growth, trade facilitation and improving citizens’ quality of life.
