THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) has formally endorsed Zimbabwe’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term.
The launch took place on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, with SADC Executive Secretary Mr Elias Magosi joining regional leaders in rallying support for Harare’s bid.
Zimbabwe’s campaign is anchored on the theme “Advancing 21st Century Solutions for Global Peace and Security through Multilateralism”, reflecting its commitment to international cooperation in addressing global security challenges.
Presiding over the launch, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Dr Amon Murwira underscored the country’s priorities should it secure the seat.
“Without peace, there can be no development,” Prof Murwira said, stressing that Zimbabwe would champion efforts to silence the guns, fight terrorism and promote dialogue on the global stage.
Zimbabwe has previously served on the UNSC twice, bringing experience and perspectives that SADC believes will contribute to advancing peace and stability.
Mr Magosi reaffirmed SADC’s full support for the bid, saying it was in line with Africa’s broader objective of strengthening its voice and representation in multilateral institutions.
The launch event also served as a platform for SADC member states and partners to highlight their shared commitment to peace, regional stability and sustainable development, with Zimbabwe positioning itself as a constructive and solution-driven player at the
Security Council.
