ZIMBABWEAN farmers are set to benefit from a ground-breaking seed treatment technology that is undergoing trials at the Department of Research, Education and Specialist Services (Dress) fields in Harare.
The development is expected to significantly boost crop yields, while promoting safer and more sustainable farming practices.
The innovative technology, developed by CP Chemicals, embeds pest control directly into the seed, reducing the need for excessive chemical spraying during the early growth stages of crops.
Chief Director for the Agricultural Research, Development and Specialist Services (Ardas), Mrs Medlinah Magwenzi said on Thursday, the trials mark a major step in modernising the agricultural sector and improving productivity.
“This new seed treatment technology represents a significant advancement for our farmers. By embedding pest control directly into the seed, we are ensuring that crops are protected from the moment they germinate,” she explained.
Mrs Magwenzi added that the innovation will assist in addressing some of the major challenges faced by farmers such as early-stage pest attacks that often result in poor crop establishment and reduced yields.
“Early pest damage can severely compromise plant populations and ultimately affect yields. With this technology, we are strengthening crop resilience at the most vulnerable stage of growth, which translates into improved productivity per hectare,” she said.
She also highlighted that the technology reduces farmers’ exposure to hazardous chemicals, as it limits the need for repeated field spraying.
Beyond health and environmental benefits, the technology is expected to lower production costs by reducing the amount of chemicals required throughout the season and, with pests controlled at source, farmers can achieve stronger crop stands, better plant vigour and ultimately higher yields.
“This innovation supports our broader national goals of food security, increased agricultural output and safer farming systems. As Ardas, we are committed to scientifically evaluating technologies that have the potential to transform productivity and livelihoods,” Mrs Magwenzi said.
If successfully adopted, the seed treatment technology could play a pivotal role in enhancing national grain output, strengthening household food security and ensuring a healthier farming environment for local communities.
The trials at Dress fields are part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development to embrace research-driven solutions that improve farmer performance and safeguard the environment, Mrs Magwenzi added. – New Ziana.
