MORE than six million people are getting food aid to mitigate against the El Niño-induced drought, a Government official has said.

This is part of Government’s promise to provide support to food-insecure Zimbabweans affected by the drought.

Responding to questions from legislators in Parliament on Wednesday, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister Mercy Dinha said each beneficiary was receiving 22,5 kilogrammes of maize to cover three months.

“At the moment, there are 6,1 million beneficiaries of grain in rural areas,” she said. “If a household consists of a father, mother and six children, for example, all of them are receiving grain.

“Each person receives 7,5 kgs of maize. So they receive grain for three months’ allocation at one go, meaning each person gets 22,5 kgs.”

Deputy Minister Dinha said the food relief programme was targeting the most vulnerable families.
