ZIMBABWE Rugby Technical Director, Brighton Chivandire believes that the Summer Sevens Series that ends today will usher in  new talent for the country’s shorter version of the game.Six teams are set to converge in Harare to battle for honours with the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) using the platform to finalise selection for the Zimbabwe Sevens rugby team, fondly known as the Cheetahs.

The Cheetahs will represent the country in the Confederation of African Rugby Sevens tournament, to be held at Harare Sports Club on November 29 and 30.

Going into today’s final, history and form favours Old Georgians to run away with the title.

With Sevens stalwarts in the form of Jacques Leitao, Fortune Chipendu and Kuda Chiwanza OGs have been a cut above the competition so far. Today they will perhaps face stiff competition from Harare Sports Club.

However, Chivandire feels it could be Southern Region sides who could make their mark in this tournament.

“The competition has been tight. It’s been a good show of talent. We’re looking forward to tomorrow with Matabeleland Busters and Western Panthers coming through. It’s going to be an intriguing battle.

“As you appreciate things evolve. The selectors may pick up new talent. You appreciate players like Stavo (Stephen Hunduza), you didn’t know about him two years ago but he lit this tournament and went to be a star in the Zimbabwe Sevens side in Hong Kong. So I will not be surprised if an unknown player makes his mark at this tournament.

“So I’m confident the selectors will pick the best team possible that will see us being competitive at Confederation of African Rugby Sevens tournament.”

Coached by Zimbabwe Cheetahs mentor Gilbert Nyamutsamba, Busters are confident of  victory in Harare.

“Everyone is geared up for the next round of the Summer Series and they’re looking forward to playing their Harare counterparts. Our aim is to win the tournament but nothing will soothe us than to contribute a significant number of players into the national team to play in the CAR Sevens Championship to be held in Harare at the end of the month,” said Rueben Kumpasa, a member of Busters technical team.

Busters’ hopes will be pinned on speed merchant Lloyd Machanjaira, Jafet Ndebele and Lucky Sithole. They also have Wesley Mbanje,

Kudakwashe Chimukuyu and upcoming star Dumi Bhebhe to carry them through.

Western Panthers are also sending a formidable side that has veteran Busani Ncube, Ntandowenkosi Ndlovu, Nigel Mugadza, Masimba Musiyapinda and Dalubuhle Maphosa.

With the National Rugby League suspended over unavailability of funds, the tournament has been a welcome relief for both clubs and rugby spectators.
