THE National University of Science and Technology will soon start enrolling students for a new telecommunications degree programme following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the university and fixed phone operator, TelOne.
Nust director of communications and marketing Felix Moyo last week said the institution was tying loose ends before the new degree, the Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, is introduced.
He said the degree would largely benefit TelOne employees.
“The degree programme was initiated by TelOne and the Nust academic board accepted the regulations and the curriculum for this degree on December 17, 2014. It’s in the process of coming on stream for Nust to offer it. The degree will largely benefit TelOne employees,” said Moyo.
“We’ll soon be putting up adverts for the degree programme and we’re most likely to start enrolling this academic year,” he said.
Moyo said under the MoU, TelOne offered to provide the equipment to be used by the students enrolled for the programme.
“The MoU aims to cement the relationship between Tel-One and the university, especially through projects that are meant to solve Tel-One problems through research. It also seeks to develop new products for commercialisation by TelOne.
“The MoU will also improve provision of facilities to Nust by Tel-One at competitive prices because we’re in partnership,” he said.
TelOne corporate communications manager Melody Harry said the partnership is expected to enhance the credibility of the TelOne’s Centre for Learning.
She said the addition of a degree programme would augment the curriculum at the centre and turn it into a premier ICT and telecommunications training institution.
TelOne managing director Chipo Mtasa said the centre for learning was responsible for upgrades in the telecommunications and tele-media sectors..
