NEW: Three City of Harare employees arrested over Budiriro drownings

THREE City of Harare employees have been arrested and charged with culpable homicide following the recovery of three bodies in a sewer sludge-filled pit in Budiriro 3 earlier this week.

The bodies, two of which are teenagers from the suburb, were discovered following recovery efforts to find the body of Saul Karakadzai after he reportedly fell into the open sewer pond while using a footpath.

The arrests come as investigations intensify, amid indications that the uncovered pit had been left open during sewer rehabilitation works by Council workers.

According to police, one of the victims accidentally fell into the pit while walking along a narrow pathway.

During efforts to retrieve the body, two other bodies were discovered in the same pit.

The victims were subsequently taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The tragedy sparked outrage among Harare residents, who accused the local authority of negligence and demanded accountability.
