NEW: Tobacco sales reach US$771 million

TOBACCO sales have earned US$771 million since the beginning of the marketing season in March this year.

According to statistics from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), 224 million kg of tobacco valued at US$771 million had been sold at an average price of US$3,44 as of July 17.

This shows an 11 percent decrease from US$874 million earned during the same period last year.

Auction floors have taken delivery of 13 million kg, while contractors contributed 211 million kg.

The highest price achieved to date is US$6,99 per kg, while the lowest is US$0,10.

About 2,9 million bales have been sold since the beginning of the marketing season
