A mining title is not a licence to plunder or degrade the environment but a privilege and responsibility to contribute to national
development in a sustainable manner that benefits future generations, Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.
He was speaking at the official opening of the 28th edition of Mine Entra 2025, where he emphasised the importance of
responsible mining at a time when Government is championing sustainable mineral exploitation.
While acknowledging the environmental challenges posed by mining, Dr Chiwenga said Government was intensifying efforts to
strike a balance between productivity and environmental preservation.
“To the miners, you are the custodians of our mineral wealth,” he said.
“Handle it with integrity. It is not yours; it belongs to the people of Zimbabwe.
“Exploit it responsibly. Protect it as a national trust, not for personal gain.”
Dr Chiwenga said Government’s thrust is to ensure everyone benefits from the mining sector, including future generations.
“To the suppliers and service providers, you are the arteries of the mining ecosystem,” he said.
“Your expertise in equipment, logistics and support keeps this industry alive.
“To the processors and off-takers, the era of raw mineral exports must give way to beneficiation and value addition. Mining
must now drive industrialisation, create jobs and support downstream sectors.”
Dr Chiwenga reiterated that Zimbabwe is open for business, not for extraction.
“To the investors, both local and international, Zimbabwe remains open for business, not for extraction,” he said.
“We seek mutual partnerships that ensure the minerals beneath our soil empower all our people.”
