A Johane Masowe eChishanu self-proclaimed prophet, Brodeck Katiyo (55), is being charged with raping a married women while claiming to remove a spiritual object from her womb.

Katiyo appeared before Murewa Regional Court magistrate Mr Obedience Matare.

He is accused of raping Elizabeth Chimutuwa (18) in May 2023 at his homestead in Katiyo village, Uzumba.

Katiyo was remanded out of custody and will return to court on February 17.

According to court documents, while at a church gathering in Shamva, Katiyo told Chimutuwa that she would struggle to conceive.

He then instructed her to visit his homestead for three days and nights of prayers.

During one of those nights, Katiyo allegedly woke Chimutuwa at midnight, claiming that the Holy Spirit had showed him an object in her womb.

He told her that the only way to remove it was through sexual intercourse with someone who is not her husband.

Chimutuwa refused, but Katiyo allegedly threatened her husband’s life if she didn’t comply.

The court heard that Katiyo then instructed Chimutuwa to lie on the ground, pulled down her pants and raped her.

Chimutuwa kept quiet about the rape until February 1, 2025, when Katiyo told her husband, Josphat Zvomuya, that she needed to return to his house for more prayers.

Chimutuwa refused to go and confided in her husband about the rape.

This led to a police report being filed at Mutawatawa Police Station.

Katiyo was subsequently arrested.

Chimutuwa underwent a medical examination at Mutawatawa District Hospital and the medical report is expected to be presented as evidence in court.

Messrs Steven Malota and Blessing Mugariri represented the State.
