THE country has recorded 2 518 veld fire incidents, which have destroyed 507 819 hectares and resulted in one death, latest figures from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) show.

EMA environmental education and publicity manager Ms Amkela Sidange said the average burnt this season has, however, declined to 507 819 from 1 080 407 compared to the same period last year.

“In an effort to reduce fire incidences and losses to veld fires the agency has intensified law enforcement and this year alone 21 dockets have been opened, and 67 tickets issued to those found violating the laws on veld fire management.”

The five most affected provinces in their order are: Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, and Midlands.
