New water pumps to ease Harare water woes

Harare City Council is expected to install new water pumps at Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant starting this Friday under the $144million Chinese loan scheme which will ease water woes in the city.

The installation exercise has been necessitated by the current state of the pumps which are now about 10 years old.

Installation of the new water pumps will be carried out in three days.

It would see Harare residents going without water from Friday afternoon up to Sunday night.

“City of Harare wishes to advise all residents of greater Harare that there will be a complete shutdown of Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant from 16.00hours on Friday January 9 to 22.00hours on Sunday January 11.

“The purpose of the shutdown is to allow for the installation of new pumps at the plant,” said City of Harare in a statement. Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme said council would remove all of the old water pumps at Morton Jaffray Water Treatment plant and replace them with new ones.

“City of Harare will renew the whole plant and remove the old pumps which are 10 years old.

“The installation of new pumps is being carried out under Harare City Council’s rehabilitation programme and is aimed at boosting the capacity of the plant,” said Mr Chideme.

Mr Chideme said the installation of the new pumps will also increase the effectiveness of Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant.
