CONTINUED strengthening of the country’s health systems is critical to sustain recent capacity gains, a World Health Organisation (WHO) Zimbabwe official has said.
This comes as Zimbabwe is transitioning to sustained management of Covid-19.
Since Covid-19 was declared an established and ongoing health issue that no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, WHO has put together a strategic preparedness and response plan.
It is expected to guide countries on what they need to do in terms of long-term Covid-19 management.
The plan, which will run from April 2023 to April 2025, focuses on five components – collaborative surveillance, community protection, safe and scalable care, access to counter measures, as well as emergency coordination.
WHO Zimbabwe emergency team lead Dr Lincoln Charimari said: “There is need to provide safe and scalable care and strong infection prevention systems, then emergency coordination around bringing together all partners and stakeholders to coordinate and to make use of each other’s comparative advantages,” he said.
As at June 6, 2023, Zimbabwe had recorded 265 210 Covid-19 cases and 259 239 recoveries.
5 695 people have succumbed to the virus.
