A 26-year-old woman from Chief Nyajina area in Uzumba, Mashonaland East, appeared before Mutawatawa magistrate Mr Obedience Matare on Wednesday for killing her six-day-old baby.

The court heard that on September 17, 2023, Nyasha Chipika threw her baby in a Blair toilet after her sister Pamela forbade her from going to their parents’ home with the newborn baby.

Instead, she was told to go to the father’s baby’s homestead.

It is the State’s case that Chipika disembarked a vehicle from Harare going to her parent’s homestead in Manyika village whilst carrying her baby girl on her back.

She then received a call from Pamela forbidding her to go to their parents’ homestead.

Chipika then proceeded to Machekera Secondary School and threw the baby in a Blair toilet before proceeding to her parent’s homestead.

Upon arrival, her mother asked her about the baby and she told her what she had done.

On September 18, Chipika accompanied her brothers – Lameck and Tirivanhu – to the police, where a report was made.

The police attended the scene and the baby was retrieved by Tirivanhu.

The baby was taken to Mutawatawa Hospital where it was pronounced dead.

Chipika will be back in court on September 28.
