NEW: ZCC launches National Disability Survey

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches has launched a National Disability Survey, which looks at the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities.

ZCC general secretary Reverend Kenneth Mtata officiated at the virtual launch of the survey on Wednesday.

Reverend Mtata said the new report proffers solutions to the problems faced by the disabled in various communities.

“As a church council it is our mandate to see that people with disability issues are raised and addressed equally the same as non-disability,” he said.

ZCC said the inclusion of women and children with disabilities is one of their strategic focal points.

Speaking during the same event, Signs of Hope Trust director Ms Samantha Sibanda urged local authorities to construct and upgrade their buildings to accommodate people with disabilities.

“Close to 15 percent of buildings in the country are friendly to people with disability, while over 75 percent are not user friendly especially for those using wheelchairs as most elevators in the buildings are not working,” said Ms Sibanda.
