STRONG diplomatic ties between Zimbabwe and Türkiye are proving to be beneficial for Geo Pomona Waste Management’s waste-to-energy project, as the company is sourcing key equipment from the transcontinental nation with ease.

Speaking after the tour of the project by Turkish Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Berna Kasnakli Versteden on Tuesday afternoon, Geo Pomona chief executive officer and executive chairperson Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said the company has been working closely with Turkish suppliers.

“The relationship between Geo Pomona Waste Management and Turkish companies is that we are importing a lot of stuff from Türkiye,” he said.

“The material used for the sports facilities was imported from Türkiye, as well as the material for the sorting plant, and the geo-membrane textile for encapsulation.

“So the relationship between Geo Pomona and Turkish companies will go a long way because we will continue to buy a lot of material from Türkiye for our construction project.”

Dr Nguwaya said the company is also working with Turkish engineers on its waste sorting plant.

Ambassador Versteden emphasised Türkiye’s commitment to exploring more areas of cooperation with Zimbabwe, particularly in waste management.

“I had the pleasure of attending the official commissioning of this project, and it is fascinating to witness the progress made since then,” she said.

She also highlighted Türkiye’s global commitment to environmental sustainability through the “Zero Waste” initiative, which gained recognition as a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2023.

“The First Lady of Zimbabwe has shown her support by signing this commitment, thereby demonstrating our shared interests in sustainability,” Ambassador Versteden said.

“At home, we are implementing similar initiatives, and I believe there are many opportunities for collaboration.”

The partnership between Zimbabwe and Türkiye in waste management continues to strengthen and open avenues for further cooperation in sustainable development.
