THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) is taking steps to ease overcrowding at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison and other facilities.

Speaking after touring the Prison Complex in Harare on Friday, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Deputy Commissioner-General Shepherd Mpofu said they are exploring the concept of parole to ease overcrowding in their facilities.

“Accommodation challenges are troubling us. The meeting we had today with the chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Dr Vincent Hungwe, was trying to solve the accommodation crisis we have in prison.

“We have come up with the concept of a parole system to help us reduce overcrowding in our facilities. The Presidential Amnesty will remain in place,” he said.

There are also plans, he said, to build new prisons with modern facilities.

“We are hoping for more prisons. As we speak, Hurungwe is going to have a new modern prison, as well as Gwanda,” said Deputy Commissioner-General Mpofu.
