THE long wait for Ngezi Platinum Stars to be crowned Castle Lager Premiership champions ended last weekend at Barbourfields when they were handed their title.
It was double celebration for midfielder, Nisbert Muzenda, who finished writing his A Level exams at Wanganui in Mhondoro last week.
The 17-year-old joined a very small group of schoolboys to win the league’s title.
He is on the cusp of doubling this rare feat with the Chibuku Super Cup should Ngezi Platinum beat Dynamos in the final on Sunday at Baobab. Muzenda is the only player who was born in Mhondoro from the crop of Ngezi Platinum players who have just be crowned in this team. His success is quite remarkable in the sense that he has played Division Two, Northern Region and PSL in a space of a year and six months. He was scouted by the team’s chief scouter, Kifton Kadurira from Turf Wolves.
The attacking midfielder only needed four months to convince coach, Takesure Chiragwi to elevate him from the team’s developmental side. Muzenda has also done well in keeping fans at the edge of their seats each time he plays.
He has the chance of ending this campaign with a PSL and the country’s flag-ship knock-out competition gold medal.
Muzenda told Zimpapers Sports that he is still yet to come to terms with what is happening in his life. “I can’t really explain what has been happening in my life but all I can say is this is just God’s will.
“I never imagined that I could win the league or even play in the PSL before finishing my studies but God has made it possible.
“I also want to thank those who made this dream a reality because without their help I was going to be one of the fans cheering this team playing the Chibuku Super Cup final on Sunday and also my family for helping me with everything,” said Muzenda.
Since 2014, no team has won this tournament away from their home ground and Ngezi Platinum could be found on the wrong side of the statistics should Dynamos beat the odds.
Dynamos have failed to get the better of Ngezi Platinum at Baobab since their arrival in the big boy’s league.
Muzenda said they are not reading much about DeMbare’s struggles in Mhondoro.
“We are treating this game just like how a final should be treated the coach has not lowered anything even after winning the championship.
“At the moment, we have forgotten about the league title because it will cost us a lot if we are found stuck in those memories.
“Dynamos have not performed well in Mhondoro in the past seasons but that can also change if we give them the freedom to believe on the pitch,” he said.
