golfer left the capital yesterday for Mutare where he will take part in this year’s Manicaland Amateur Championships at Hillside Golf Club.
The young golfer has bagged the Julius Robinson Trophy, which was the first amateur event of the season, and did not feature top amateur Scott Vincent, who was in South Africa.
Nguru went on to win the Mashonaland West amateur championships by beating the stiff challenge from Mathew Ncube, Dale Howie, Kyle Basson and Emanuel Hungwe.
Nguru continued with his fine form when he lifted the Matabeleland Amateur and the Chapman Club championship.
Now he is aiming for another title in Mutare this weekend and wants to find the range that made him a hot player on the tour earlier. “I think I have what it takes to pose a good challenge,” said Nguru.
“There are a lot of good golfers who can do well on their day and they have the chance as well.”
The St Cosmas College student has, of late, been concentrating on his studies.
“I was tied up with school work and I did not do a lot of practice for the event but I am confident that I can do well,” he said.
“There will be competition from the likes of Vincent, Greg Bentley, Basson and several others but I am not reading too much into their play.”
It was at this tournament, last year, where Barry Painting ended Vincent’s 25-match unbeaten run.
But this tourney should present Vincent, who is set to travel to the United States, with another chance of adding to his collection.
Meanwhile, tomorrow Wingate Park will host the first women’s league matches.
