WARRIORS forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has set his sights on another productive campaign after returning to Amazulu’s pre-season programme and already finding the net.
The 23-year-old forward recently received Amazulu’s Golden Boot after finishing the 2025/26 season as the Durban club’s leading goalscorer despite an injury-disrupted debut campaign in South Africa.
Ngwenya scored eight goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, including six goals and one assist in the Premiership. He achieved those figures despite spending a significant part of the season on the sidelines.
The former FC Platinum striker has since returned to full training and opened his pre-season account by scoring against Midlands Wanderers, helping AmaZulu advance to the final of the KZN Premier’s Cup.
Ngwenya said the club award had given him added motivation ahead of the new season.
“Winning the club’s Golden Boot means a lot to me, particularly because it was my first season with AmaZulu,” said Ngwenya.
“It was not an easy campaign because injuries disrupted my rhythm and kept me out of several matches. To still finish as the club’s leading goalscorer is something I am proud of, but I believe I can offer much more.”
Ngwenya joined Amazulu from FC Platinum in July last year and quickly adjusted to the demands of the South African Premiership.
He scored important goals against Kaizer Chiefs, Magesi and TS Galaxy before injuries restricted his appearances during the second half of the campaign.
The striker said returning for pre-season and scoring early had helped restore his confidence.
“It is encouraging to be back with the team and to score during pre-season,” he said.
“As a striker, you always want to find the net, even in friendly or preparation matches. The goal has given me confidence, but the main focus is on improving my fitness and being ready when the competitive matches begin.
“My target is to remain healthy, play more matches and improve on what I achieved last season. I want to score more goals, create opportunities for my teammates and help Amazulu compete.”
Ngwenya’s injury problems previously forced him to withdraw from the national squad after earning recognition through his early-season performances.
He believes regular football with Amazulu will strengthen his case for further international opportunities.
“Representing Zimbabwe is always an honour,” he said.
“My responsibility is to perform consistently for Amazulu because that is what will give me an opportunity to represent the national team.
“I appreciate the support I received from the coaches, medical team, management, my teammates and the supporters during my difficult period. I now want to repay that faith through my performances on the pitch.”
