BULAWAYO Chiefs will not be renewing the contract of head coach, Johanisi Nhumwa, when it lapses on December 31.
At Chiefs, the former Manica Diamonds’ gaffer replaced Joseph Sibindi, who left the club after a few games, having also replaced Lizwe Sweswe who is now at Gweru-based Sheasham.
Nhumwa did well to ensure the club maintained their topflight status despite the club’s financial challenges during the course of the season.
Chiefs’ secretary-general Dumisani Sibanda announced the development yesterday.
“Bulawayo Chiefs would like to notify all stakeholders that the contract of head coach Johanisi Nhumwa expires on the 31st of December 2023 and that the club will not be renewing the contract with coach Nhumwa.
“We are greatly indebted to coach Nhumwa for the excellent job he did at Bulawayo Chiefs, we credit our survival in the league to him and his technical staff.
“We therefore wish coach Nhumwa all the best going forward, his actions will remain engraved in our history.
“On that note we would like to say that we will be making further announcements on the structure,” said Sibanda.
Already, rumours are doing rounds the club might be bringing on board former coach Thulani Sibanda, who left Triangle four games before the end of the season.
Sibanda has left Chiefs several times and still found his way back to the side he helped gain promotion into the topflight league.
Bulawayo Chiefs finished on position 13 on the log table.
The club, which was promoted in 2018, has over the past two years had their share of financial troubles.
Players have on countless occasions refused to train and even threatened to boycott matches over non-payment of salaries.
Chiefs’ high so far is winning the Chibuku Super Cup in 2022 when they beat Herantals 1-0 at Barbourfields Stadium. —@innocentskizoe
