Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria was a foundational figure in Zimbabwean sungura music, revered as a guitarist, bandleader, mentor, and cultural visionary whose influence shaped the genre for nearly five decades.

Born in 1957 at Belgownie Estates in Mazowe, Madzibaba rose from humble beginnings to establish the legendary Khiama Boys, a band that produced countless classic hits.

He founded the Khiama Boys in 1984 after departing from the Vhuka Boys, and the group quickly gained popularity throughout Zimbabwe and beyond during the 1980s and 1990s.

Throughout his illustrious career, Madzibaba released 29 albums, with reports indicating plans for a 30th, highlighting his prolific creativity and unwavering dedication to his art.

His marriage to Margaret Gweshe Zakaria has been cited as his emotional anchor, providing stability amid the rigors of touring, recording, and leading his band.

Known as the “Senior Lecturer,” Madzibaba made a significant impact by mentoring artists such as Alick Macheso and System Tazvida, helping them rise to stardom.

However, his journey was not without challenges. He faced alleged feuds with former band members over creative direction and management, leading to both separations and artistic growth within the sungura scene.

Offstage, Madzibaba was a strategic entrepreneur, investing in farming, transport, and community ventures.

His humility, discipline, and prolific legacy will ensure that his influence continues to resonate long after his passing.
