NINE people have died since Good Friday in separate road accidents countrywide while 43 were injured, police said yesterday.
Statistics show that 10 people died during the same period last year while 87 were injured.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the deaths.
“We continue urging people coming from holidays to observe road traffic regulations.
“Motorists should check their tyres to ensure that they are in good condition before they embark on a journey and avoid speeding,” she said.
She said speeding was the main cause of the accidents.
In 2015, police recorded 10 deaths down from 19, the previous year.
Prior to this year’s Easter holiday, the ZRP deployed more cops on the country’s major roads.
They held joint operations with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and the Vehicle Inspection Department to ensure sanity prevails on the roads.
Speeding, human error, misjudgment, overloading and defective vehicles are some of the reasons police say contribute to road accidents in the country.
The flow of traffic on Zimbabwe’s major roads usually increases during holidays like Easter as more people take the opportunity to travel.
