Nkala scoops 2 ICDZ awards

FBC Holdings board chairman Mr Herbert Nkala scooped the coveted Board Chairperson of the Year accolade at the Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe (ICDZ) awards ceremony held in the capital on Thursday.

Mr Nkala was the toast of the evening as he walked away with two awards, adding the Board Chairperson of Listed Companies honour to the Board Chairperson of the Year, in which Simbisa Brands chairman Mr Addington Chinake was the first runner-up.

Although Mr Nkala scooped the accolades in his capacity as the FBC chairman, he also chairs the Turnall Fibre Cement (Pvt) Ltd, Zimbabwe Grain Bag (Pvt) Ltd, OK Zimbabwe Ltd and other reputable companies’ boards, in addition to being the managing director of Arena Investments (Pvt) Ltd.

Themed “Recognising astute directorship in turbulent times”, the ICDZ Excellence Awards are designed to recognise individuals’ contributions through their respective boards to strategic direction, sound corporate governance and good corporate citizenship as reflected in the operational performance of their enterprises.

Upon receiving the coveted awards, Mr Nkala encouraged his fellow directors to stay focused in order to effectively address whatever challenges their companies and the country might be experiencing under the current economic climate.

He implored the youthful directors of companies gathered at the event to make hard work a principle in the execution of their duties as heads of businesses.

“Young directors here should anchor your life on hard work and honest , I wish you all young directors here a bright future in a wonderful country called Zimbabwe,” Mr Nkala said.

In other honours bestowed that night, Ms Natalie Jabangwe, the general manager of EcoCash, won the Director of the Year prize while Mr David Kanengoni of Mutare Bottlers and Mr Tinashe Mutarisi of Nash Paints were the first and second runners-up respectively.

Mr Thompson Dondo of Impala Car Rental walked away with the Corporate Director — Small to Medium Enterprises while Ms Mandas Marikanda of ZWMB scooped the Women Champion in Boards. Ms Emilia Chisango (Econet chief finance officer), Ms Ruth Ncube (First Mutual Life) and Ms Linda Matterson of Edgars were the first, second and third runners-up respectively.

Also notable amongst the individual category awards was Mr Gary Sharp, the chief executive officer of Padenga Holdings, who scooped the Corporate Director Listed Companies while Mr Thembinkosi Sibanda of AXIA , Mr Roy Chimanikire (EcoCash) and Mr Edwin Shangwa (managing director of African Sun Zimbabwe) were the runners-up.
