LARGE companies and tender-awarding bodies should support local businesses, as this is the surest way to create jobs and grow the Nkayi district economy.

This was said by Mr Bothwell Mushanduri, Matabeleland North Provincial Business Development Officer under the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MWACSMED).

He was the guest of honour at the Nkayi Business Expo held at the Nkayi Business Centre, emphasizing the critical role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in local economic development.

“”I urge those in positions to award tenders to prioritize giving contracts to registered SMEs within Nkayi District. This not only strengthens our local economy but also ensures that we are building a community that thrives on mutual support,” said Mr Mushanduri.

He challenged mining companies and other large enterprises operating in the area to help promote local businesses by sourcing goods and services from them.

“Furthermore, I call upon mining organizations and other large enterprises to promote local SMEs by sourcing goods and services from them,” Mr Mushanduri.

“By doing so, you will not only enhance your supply chains but also empower our local entrepreneurs, enabling them to grow and contribute to the economic fabric of Nkayi.”

“By choosing to work with local businesses, we create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and foster a sense of pride in our community. Let us work together to create a symbiotic relationship that benefits both large organizations and our local SMEs.”

He said innovation was the lifeblood of any successful enterprise.

“In a rapidly changing world, our ability to adapt and innovate will determine our success. I encourage each of you to embrace new technologies, explore creative solutions, and seek out partnerships that foster collaborative innovation. Together, we can elevate our businesses and create products and services that not only meet local needs but also compete on a global scale,” said Mr Mushanduri.

He highlighted Government initiatives through the Ministry, including capacity-building programs under the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation (SMEDCO), the Women’s Development Fund (WDF), and the Zimbabwe Community Development Fund (ZCDF).

He said these programs aim to equip SMEs with necessary skills and resources for market competitiveness.

Mr Mushanduri urged the importance of business formalization for SMEs to access funding and wider markets.

He said looking to the future, it was time to revive the Nkayi Crafts Centre.

“This centre has the potential to be a hub of creativity, innovation, and collaboration for artisans and entrepreneurs alike. By revitalizing this space, we can provide a platform for our local craftspeople to showcase their talents, share knowledge, and connect with markets. Let us work together to bring this vision to life, ensuring that our rich cultural heritage is preserved and celebrated through entrepreneurship,” said Mr Mushanduri.

The expo provided a networking platform for entrepreneurs, with Mr Mushanduri emphasizing the importance of collaborations to drive Nkayi’s economic growth.
