Nkayi girl example of rural cricket development

FORMER Nkayi High School pupil Lindrose Masina is hopeful of making it into the Lady Chevrons batting order.

Masina started playing cricket at Nkayi High school under the tutelage of coach Aaron Phiri. She made it into the provincial Under-19 and two years ago moved to Bulawayo to join the Tuskers.

She is a shining example of the Tuskers rural development of the sport for girls and believes the sport is growing well in the province.

In an interview during the week she paid tribute to her elementary level coach, Phiri who did a lot to get her to the level she is today.

“I started playing cricket at Nkayi High School under coach Aaron. I played for Under-19 for Matabeleland North while coached by coach Aaron who is at Mosi Oa Tunya High School,” said the batswoman whose highest tally of runs in a match, she said, was 40 runs a fair figure in limited overs provincial cricket.

She expressed her desire to play for the national team in the near future.

“From this year I am expecting to play hard and be counted in the Lady Chevrons national team,” said Masina.

Masina urged young girls to take up cricket as it can take them places.

“With cricket they will be able to visit places that they ordinarily would not be able to. So I urge them to consider taking up the sport,” said Masina while on a batting break at Queens on Tuesday where she was training with wicketkeeper of the Lady Chevrons Chiedza Dururu.

Dururu is preparing for the Lady Chevrons’ final qualifiers for the World Cup set for United Arab Emirates later this year.

Tuskers boss Nicholas Singo said he is happy with the strides being made in women’s cricket in the province. He said the sport is growing with numbers of participants increasing all the time.
