Nkayi man nabbed for raping minor

IN a heart wrecking incident, a 42-year-old man from Nkayi in Matabeleland North province allegedly raped a 16-year-old juvenile under the pretext of helping her find accommodation.

George Moyo has been arraigned before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing two charges of rape and one charge of escaping from lawful custody.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to Friday for continuation of trial. State allegations against the culprit are that on 23 June 2024, Moyo met up with the juvenile at Nkayi Business Centre. The victim had come to the business centre to look for a job but it was late for her to return to her village.

She asked Moyo to help her find a place to sleep and he agreed. The culprit sought some help from his neighbour, Siphilisiwe Ncube who agreed to help the victim.

At around 10 pm, Moyo went to Ncube’s house and told the victim to carry her luggage indicating that he wanted to take her to a policeman’s house.

On their way to the house, Moyo demanded sex from the victim and she declined. He diverted the route and when they near a local secondary school, he tripped the victim and she fell to the ground.

He went on to undress and raped her once without protection. After the rape, he took the victim to the policeman’s house and alleged that the victim had entered his premises without his consent.

The officer advised him to report the matter at the police station and they left. Along the way, he led the victim to a deserted and dilapidated house and raped her again without protection.

After the incident, he chased the victim away and left. The victim was saved by Nomagugu Ndlovu who escorted her to the police station to report the matter. This led to the arrest of the culprit.

The police took Moyo and the victim to the dilapidated structure for indications and while they were at the scene, Moyo fled. The police gave chase and he was arrested.
