Nkayi man stabbed in dispute over cigarette

The man, Codious Mhlanga (20), of Zinyangeni area under Chief Nkalakatha, allegedly committed the offence on New Year’s Day at about 12 noon.

He had been drinking beer at a neighbour’s homestead with the victim, Mr Thabani Ndlovu (29) celebrating the coming of the New Year.

Mhlanga allegedly left the homestead with Mr Ndlovu and after the argument, he stabbed him and left him for dead.

Confirming the incident yesterday, the police spokesperson for Matabeleland North, Inspector Billie Dube, said police tracked down Mhlanga and arrested him soon after the attack.

“The two argued over a cigarette and the suspect produced an Okapi knife from his pocket and stabbed Mhlanga thrice,” said Insp Dube.

Insp Dube said Mhlanga ran away thinking he had killed his friend.

“The suspect fled from the scene, but police tracked him down and arrested him. As we speak, he is assisting police with investigations. Ndlovu was rushed to Nkayi District Hospital where he has been admitted,” he said.
