A MAN from Nketa suburb in Bulawayo committed suicide on Thursday morning.
Tumelo Mpofu (21) hanged himself from the roof of his bedroom around 8AM, leaving no suicide note.
Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the incident yesterday.
“I confirm that we received a sudden death report which happened at Nketa 9 and investigations are still in progress,” Insp Simango said.
The area’s councillor Mzama Dube said he was shocked when he received news of the tragedy.
“It is sad to lose a young member of society. This is the second suicide that has happened in this area. Last year a 21-year- old woman killed herself.
People should seek counselling when they have problems so that they don’t go to such extremes,” said Cllr Dube.
He said he arrived at the scene before the police had collected the body.
“The boy was hanging from the roof, fully dressed as if he was planning to go somewhere. Below him, was a coffee table and a bucket lying on the ground. It was as if the bucket was on the coffee table before he kicked it away,” said Cllr Dube.
A close family member said Mpofu’s death might have been a result of stress.
“The young man was HIV positive and when his girlfriend found out, they had an argument. I suppose that is one of the reasons he hanged himself,” said the family source.
Mpofu’s mother refused to comment.
“Those who are supposed to be informed already know what transpired. Go write whatever information you have been told by your other sources and write their names and signatures too. No one here will tell you what happened,” she said.
Mpofu earned a living by washing cars.
