A 24-year-old Nkulumane man who allegedly covered his face with cardboard boxes to conceal his identity while committing a string of house and business break-ins has been arrested by Bulawayo police.
Lovesen Khumbulani Zhungu’s alleged five-month crime spree, which lasted from May to September 2026, came to an end last Monday when he was arrested while trying to sell a stolen speaker, leading to the recovery of property worth US$3 000 and R200.
Further police investigations led to the recovery of property worth US$700.
“Between 28 May and 28 September 2026, a number of unlawful entry and theft cases were reported at homes, schools and business premises in Nkulumane, Bulawayo. In all the cases, the accused person allegedly climbed onto roofs, broke asbestos sheets and ceilings to gain entry into the premises and stole groceries, cosmetics, cell phones, speakers, alcohol, cash and other valuables,” said Bulawayo provincial acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu.
Ass Insp Ndlovu said last Monday police received a tip-off that Zhungu was selling a suspected stolen JVC speaker.
“He was arrested and subsequently led police to various tuck-shop owners, where some of the stolen property was recovered. Investigations indicate that the accused person operated alone.
“He allegedly conducted surveillance during the day and broke into premises at night, while concealing his face with cardboard boxes and turning CCTV cameras away,” she said.
Police commended members of the public for providing information which led to the arrest of the suspect.
“Members of the public are urged to take proactive and effective security measures to protect their homes, schools and business properties against unlawful entry and theft. The community is strongly advised to target-harden their premises by securing doors and windows, installing burglar bars, security lighting, alarms and CCTV systems where possible and ensuring that valuable property is kept in secure locations.”
