BULAWAYO Under-20 boys’ Top Schools Basketball champions, Nkulumane High, completed a double over Christian Brothers College (CBC) with a 40-28 win in the All-Star Weekend Skaters competition played at Khanyisile Sports Centre on Saturday.
The match was part of the Bulawayo Basketball Association (BBA) fundraising activities for the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) Provincial Championships slated for Masvingo from March 26-27.
Bulawayo will send four teams, the senior men and women as well as the boys’ and girls’ Under-18s.
BBA secretary-general, Howard Phangwana, said they had realised $191 from the weekend’s activities.
“Our initial target was $300, but we got $191 which is okay considering that our outdoor activities, which included a car wash, were affected by the heavy rains. We are now making efforts on reducing our budget and I’m happy to report that we’ve already secured a vehicle to transport some of the players and we’re hoping to get another one soon,” said Phangwana.
“Another resolution we have undertaken is that we will spend one night instead of two in Masvingo, meaning we will leave Bulawayo early Saturday, play our games and return on Sunday. That way we will reduce accommodation expenses,” said Phangwana.
In the event that they fail to raise enough money, Phangwana said accommodation and food costs will be divided among members of the BBA executive.
“We’re leading by example and at times being leaders we have to make sacrifices. We are definitely going with all the four teams to Masvingo,” Phangwana said.
The provincial boys’ and girls’ teams will be finalised today.
