The murder and suicide occurred between the evening of Thursday and Friday morning last week.
It is understood that trouble began when Madzikatire was drinking beer with his nephew Nkomo, both aged 20. They argued over who was going to prepare their Thursday supper.
But the Nkomo family broke its silence on the matter during the burials yesterday, vehemently denying the claim that they fought over food, saying it was a “mere” accident.
Nkomo is alleged to have fatally stabbed Madzikatire before fleeing the scene. He was later found hanging from a tree in the yard of a house in the same neighbourhood.
Speaking at the funeral of the two at West Park Cemetery yesterday, the Nkomo family’s spokesperson, a Mr P Nkomo, said the recent reports were untrue, as the pair’s altercation was not over food.
He, however, could not specify the nature of the accident, saying it was fuelled by bad spirits that engrossed the pair on the fateful day.
The two men were buried side by side at a funeral that was emotionally charged.
“The two young men had a minor misunderstanding which resulted in the other one making a mistake killing his uncle. Upon realising his mistake he was gripped by fear of his family and that of God and he had to take his life,” said Mr Nkomo.
He said the family did not suspect that the now deceased had been bewitched.
“The boys are now resting and no one will start to report anyone to the police because they wronged each other and they are both sleeping here,” said Mr Nkomo.
He said there was no bad blood within the family, as they were at peace despite the incidents.
“From here we are not going to start fighting, we are only going to turn to God,” said Mr Nkomo.
The owner of the Nkulumane 11 house at which Mthulisi hanged himself after allegedly killing his uncle has demanded that the assailant’s family cleanse his home with immediate effect.
Mr Glenn Sibanda had indicated to the late man’s family that he wants his house cleansed soon after the burial of the two men, as he fears his house could be haunted. The assailant’s family is expected to pay for the costs of the cleansing ritual.
The lemon tree, which was about three metres tall, where Mthulisi hanged himself has since been cut down and burnt.
Cultural activist Mr Pathisa Nyathi has emphasised the need for Mr Sibanda’s home to be cleansed so that the late Nkomo’s troubled spirit is put at ease.
