Tsholotsho v Triangle (league match)
Tsholotsho conceded a goal in the first minute of the game showing a high lack of concentration and their failure to win individual duels was amateurish.
After all in amateur leagues and schools’ football there are between 200 and 300 individual duels and you need to win two thirds of these to stand any chance of winning a game.
Modern football is not static and a team that cannot change will struggle as it is not enough to be told you played good attacking football which entertained the fans but lost games and have to be relegated.
People always talk about attacking football but no attack based on weak defence can succeed because football is not just a game of attacking and defending, but a combination of good attacking and defending. In other words, the attack and defensive responsibilities in a team belongs to every player. Tsholotsho coach Lizwe Sweswe needs to work on this.
Kelvin Kaindu must be proud of his Triangle players as they scored good goals and maintained tactical discipline. He should continue working hard as you can never know where such play can take you on the league table.
White City Stadium management should relocate the advertising boards that are too close to the pitch as these can easily injure players.
How Mine v Highlanders
You can watch Highlanders and How Mine playing daily but still fail to predict the score. This is a game where Highlanders displayed some great quality football. Highlanders’ performance was just something out of this world.
It has taken me about 10 years to see a team coming up with intelligent moves to create scoring opportunities in the last third of the pitch khonapho khonapho. Seeing Knox Mutizwa scoring with a clever chip that only Bosso legend Tito Paketh mastered was unbelievable.
Well done to anchorman Simon Munawa for making some clever runs into the box.
Pity there was no TV coverage for those that could not attend the match to understand what I am trying to describe. But those at the stadium witnessed a truly marvellous display by Highlanders. Coach Bongani Mafu does not have to fix anything for tomorrow’s match against FC Platinum since nothing is broken. I am sure he slept like a baby on Sunday night for the first time this year. Well done coach.
I was just wondering what the referees could have said to How Mine coach Luke Masomere given the unsavoury statements he made about them in the media in the build-up to the match. After Sunday’s embarrassing defeat, my advice to Masomere and other coaches is that they should just concentrate on the following:
l acquire the best players
l gel the team
l create a loose framework that suits the talent of each player
l make each player tactically aware of his own and his teammates’ role in the side
l declare common objectives
l demand realistic expectations from everyone attached to the side
l convince key players in the team to take responsibility
l instil pride in their playing performance
l instil discipline
l promote yourself, the players and the club.
