Police in Bulawayo last night said they had not received reports of deaths related to an abandoned topflight match in the city despite social media users suggesting there had been fatalities.
There were skirmishes between Dynamos and Highlanders fans during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Barbourfields Stadium which was later abandoned in the first-half with the former leading 2-0.
Sharing disturbing videos and photos on social media yesterday, some users claimed that there had been deaths.
However, Bulawayo police spokesman, Inspector Abednico Ncube, said his office had not received information of deaths linked to the game. He could not comment on the number of injured or those arrested for their part in the skirmishes.
“The police are still carrying out investigations after the violent disturbances at Barbourfields Stadium but so far we have not received reports of any deaths.
“Police details are still on the ground as we speak, hours after the unfortunate incidents at Barbourfields. We still don’t have the exact number of arrests at the moment. Once that information is available, we will make it public,” said Insp Ncube.
