THE Department of Civil Registry has assured citizens that it is on top of the situation regarding meeting passport demands, saying queues at its offices are normal at this time of the year.
Long winding queues were witnessed at the Bulawayo Registry offices as people jostled to apply for passports, something which had not been seen for a while.
However, Registrar General Mr Henry Machiri said there was no need for panic from members of the public, as the department was managing the situation.
“The festive season is our busiest period and we were expecting this again this year. There is no need for the public to panic. Our diaspora citizens are around for Christmas and they take advantage of this time when they come home to apply and renew their passports,” said Mr Machiri.
He said industry closures and the school holiday also contribute to the resurgence of queues, reassuring the nation that the Department is coping well and everyone will be served.
“The increase is normally experienced during this time up to the first week of January. Again, I assure you that we are on top of the situation. Those applying for passports will get them on time,” said the Registrar General.
