SEXUAL Harassment has no place in the ZRP, a senior police officer has said.
Officer Commanding Harare South District, Chief Superintendent Maxwell Majojo, said this as he spoke during the official opening of a District Police Network Sexual Harassment Workshop yesterday.
“Sexual harassment has no place in the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
“It has no place in any workplace, in any home, in any corner of our society.
“Our credibility as protectors begins with how we treat one another.
“How can we ask a survivor out there in Budiriro, in Glen View, in Highfield to trust us enough to come forward, if within our own ranks a woman is made to feel small, unsafe, or unheard?”
Supt Majojo said harassment takes many forms—from jokes and inappropriate comments to unwanted touching, messages sent at night, and threats linked to rank or promotion.
“If it was unwanted, it was wrong. There is no version of that truth that changes with rank, with uniform, or with excuse.
“Silence in the face of harassment is not neutrality, it is permission.
“From this day forward, every report brought to Harare South District will be received with dignity, investigated without fear or favour, and resolved with fairness, whether the accused is a constable or a commissioned officer.”
District Women Network chairperson, Superintendent Busisiwe Nxumalo, said the workshop was held because police must uphold professional standards.
“Sexual harassment affects a person’s dignity, their safety, and their ability to work with confidence.
“As professionals, we have a responsibility to ensure that every person in every workplace feels respected, safe, and valued.
“Today’s workshop is a safe space. It is a space to learn, to ask questions, to learn harmful behaviours and to recommit ourselves to a culture of respect,” she said.
She added:
“Let us leave here more informed, more courageous, and more committed to building a Zimbabwe Republic Police that our daughters would be proud to join.”
The organising workshop team leader and District Community Relations Liaison Officer, Assistant Inspector Betty Chinyanga, station chaplins, Constables Makovere and Teveraishe were impressed by the attendance and participation during the question and answer sessions.
