Gahadzikwa yesterday said he was aware of the task that awaits them in Bulawayo as they prepare for their fourth meeting with Highlanders this year. The football gods seem to have favoured them in the most crucial encounters against Highlanders this season, though.
The Mighty Bulls emerged victorious twice in back to back league duels but had earlier in the season suffered a penalty shootout defeat in the semi-finals of the Independence Cup, eventually won by Bosso after beating Dynamos in a drab final at the National Sports Stadium back in April.
But Gahadzikwa believes Motor Action have a chance to win their first silverware this season with a victory over Bosso, although he predicted a tough outing.
“It’s imperative that we win this cup and get an early Christmas box. Cup games are difficult to predict, though, but we will try our best. Everyone is eager for the challenge,” said Gahadzikwa.
Winners will walk away US$50 000 richer while the runners up are assured of a US$20 000 cheque for their efforts.
Motor Action beat Highlanders 1-0 in a league match at Motor Action Sports Club the last time the teams met. The Mighty Bulls had also previously won the first leg encounter 2-0 at Barbourfields. But
Gahadzikwa said they would not be fooled into complacency by paying too much attention to results from previous matches.
“Highlanders are not a small team and I think it’s going to be tricky for us. There’s an immediate incentive for the winners and everyone wants the money and the cup at the end of the day,” he said.
Stakes are higher in this year’s tournament, after the sponsors poured in US$500 000 for the competition.
The 2011 sponsorship deal included kits for participating teams, accommodation, transport and individual player awards for man-of-the-match, player of the tournament, top goal scorer and most disciplined player.
