NORTON Town Council last week held pre-budget consultative meetings with schools, youths and women as part of preparations for the 2027 council budget.
Speaking at the consultations, Norton Town Council credit controller Mr Simba Pennias said the council’s total debtors’ position from January to July 2026 stood at ZWG910 853 319,98, up from ZWG579 533 101,53 during the same period last year.
“We have settlements and undeveloped stands that we are unable to fully enforce because they are unoccupied,” he said.
Mr Pennias said council was issuing summonses, letters of demand and final demands to non-compliant consumers as part of efforts to improve revenue collection.
He added that council had also engaged its lawyers to work with property developers on revenue collection.
During the women’s pre-budget consultation, Deputy Mayor and Ward 10 Councillor Yovani Tapera proposed the construction of more clinics in the 2027 budget.
“Mothers are coming from as far as Kingsdale to Utano for baby weighing. So we need more clinics for mothers,” she said.
Ward 4 Councillor Tarisai Mazarura proposed that council make land available to women in her ward who are involved in horticulture.
Proportional Representation Councillor for Ward 6, Shupikai Sigudu, proposed the establishment of markets as part of the council’s budget priorities.
