Notorious youthful offender sentenced to one year in prison for assault and property damage in Zimbabwe

TSHOLOTSHO, Zimbabwe – In a recent court ruling, an 18-year-old man from Tsholotsho known for his history of hooliganism has been sentenced to one year in prison for charges related to malicious damage to property and assault.

The judgment was delivered by the local court following a series of incidents involving the accused, Brendon Tshanda Sibanda. According to the court proceedings, the young man was found guilty of multiple offences, including maliciously damaging property and several counts of assault. These actions, which have reportedly caused distress and concern among community members, led to his sentencing.

The court found the accused guilty of engaging in destructive behaviour that harmed both individuals and the community at large. Sibanda was convicted and sentenced by a Tsholotsho Magistrate on four counts of assault and two counts of malicious property damage.

According to excerpts from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incidents began when two young complainants, aged 17 and 19, left their bicycles outside a shop at Mbalibali Shopping Centre. They found Sibanda’s acquaintance, Fana Fana, pushing the bicycles towards Sibanda, who was sitting near a borehole. The complainants tried to stop Fana Fana but failed, and Fana Fana indicated that he had been instructed to hand over the bicycles by Sibanda.

After receiving the bicycles, the 17-year-old complainant confronted Sibanda, leading to an altercation in which Sibanda struck the complainant in the face and produced a knife, chasing the complainant. When the 19-year-old complainant tried to restrain Sibanda, he was also threatened with the knife.

Sibanda is then reported to have slashed the complainants’ bicycle tyres with the knife. He was also charged for stabbing another complainant twice in the thigh, after accusing the individual of stealing his beer. These incidents led to Sibanda’s arrest and the subsequent court ruling.

The sentencing of this young offender underscores the importance of addressing youth-related crime and promoting constructive community engagement to foster a safer and more harmonious society in Zimbabwe
