THE MCM Northern Region Soccer League has reached one of its most decisive phases, with a football expert saying the more consistent of the two title-chasing teams will win the championship.
Eight rounds of matches are left before the season ends, with log leaders Black Rhinos sitting at the top of the log with 63 points after 33 games, while second-placed Harare City follow closely with 60 points.
Of the two title-chasing teams, Rhinos have been consistent, chalking up impressive wins.
On the other hand, City often blow hot and cold, sometimes losing matches against struggling teams. City also have an extra workload as they are set to take part in the Super8 final.
History might repeat itself in the NRSL, with the chances of the title race being decided on the very last day of the season being high.
In 2025, Agama won the championship title on the very last day of the season, pipping N’ombeyawora to the throne.
In a major upset, the MWOS U-19 team beat N’ombeyawora on the last day of the season, handing the Mount Darwin-based Agama a ticket to the top league.
Analyst Bhekhi Nyoni spoke about the qualities that the leading teams must have to win the title. “Teams must have the mental capacity to hold their nerve at this stage.”
“There is need for the title-chasing teams to remain focused and be consistent,” Nyoni said.
Based on the two teams’ strengths and weaknesses, inconsistency might work against Try Ncube’s Harare City.
Meanwhile, a number of midweek games have been lined up for t0day and Thursday.
In tomorrow’s matches, Harare City and Highrange will play at Rufaro, with Cranborne Bullets hosting Jumbo Giants.
Marere host Banket United at Rimuka, while MWOS U-19 and Chegutu Pirates tussle at Ngoni.
PAM FC have a tough test against Chingwere at Pfupajena. Black Rhinos are away to Ngezi U-19, with Black Mambas hosting Batanai at the Mkushi Academy grounds.
Tomorrow, G&T Mining will lock horns with Karoi United at Rimuka. At Gwanzura, CP Chemicals play Zambezi Gas and Coal.
Golden Eagles are away to Rangers.
