THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) says it is committed to fully realising its role as an economic enabler by adopting modern transport and logistics solutions, with a focus on increasing cargo volumes for imports and exports.
In an interview, NRZ spokesperson Mr Andrew Kunambura said the parastatal was aligning its operations with the Second Republic’s vision of transforming transportation and logistics.
“The NRZ is committed to implementing the Second Republic’s vision in terms of advancements in transportation and logistics, which include ensuring we move all bulk goods, be they imports, exports or local products required by our manufacturing and other sectors.
“Therefore, we stand ready to ensure that our enabler effect is realised in full,” he said.
As part of these efforts, NRZ has introduced a special Rail Leisure Train Service between Harare and Mutare for the 18th Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, which will run from September 10 to 12 at Mutare Sports Club.
Mr Kunambura said the service would be temporary.
“This is a special service which, as of now, will discontinue after the expo. Should there be any further developments, notice shall be given,” he said.
In a statement, NRZ said the train – currently undergoing refurbishment at its Bulawayo mechanical workshops — will have a carrying capacity of 243 passengers.
The Harare-Mutare railway line has also been fully rehabilitated to ensure smooth travel while offering scenic views of Zimbabwe’s natural beauty.
The train will not operate on September 10 and 11, as those days have been reserved for local excursions in Mutare.
During the expo, NRZ will provide luxury rail travel for exhibitors, buyers, media and visitors, complete with onboard entertainment and refreshments.
The initiative is being rolled out in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).
It also comes a week after Air Zimbabwe announced daily return flights between Harare and Mutare from September 8 to 14, in a move aimed at easing access to the Eastern Highlands while supporting its turnaround strategy.
The annual Sanganai/Hlanganani Expo is one of Africa’s premier tourism showcases, bringing together local and international exhibitors, industry professionals and visitors to explore Zimbabwe’s diverse attractions and investment opportunities.
