The National Railways of Zimbabwe has suspended the Bulawayo-Beitbridge passenger train while it upgrades the railway infrastructure between Esigodini and Mbalabala.
In a statement last week, NRZ public relations manager Mr Fanuel Masikati said the passenger train would be suspended for about six weeks.
“The Bulawayo–Beitbridge passenger train service has been temporarily suspended for a period of approximately six weeks starting from Sunday 27 July 2014 and normal services will resume on a date still to be advised,” Mr Masikati said.
“The suspension is meant to make way for the upgrading of the railway infrastructure between Mbalabala and Esigodini section of the railway line,” said Mr Masikati.
“It is pertinent to mention that safety takes precedence in all our operations and hence the on-going railway infrastructure rehabilitation and upgrading the system, including the line connecting Bulawayo to Beitbridge.”
The NRZ has guaranteed that most of the passenger trains would be available to ferry passengers to various places for the Heroes and Defence Forces holiday, with a lot of passengers travelling starting from Friday last week.
The Bulawayo-Beitbridge train service is popular with cross-border shoppers who travel to South Africa.
