AT least 65 workers died while 5 007 others were injured in work-related accidents last year, the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) has said. Addressing people gathered for Workers Day commemorations at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo on Wednesday, NSSA Regional Occupational Safety and Health Inspector, Mr Marvelous Sauro, said his organisation was working flat out to eliminate risks for employees at their places of work.
The authority had launched a Vision Zero campaign to eliminate death or injury of workers at workplaces.
He said his organisation was concerned about the 65 deaths and 5 007 injured workers while in the line of duty in 2017.
“As NSSA we are bound by a Prevention and Workers Compensation Scheme to make sure every worker is working in a conducive environment,” said Mr Sauro.
“We have launched a Vision Zero campaign to make sure no worker is injured or dies at work going forward. In 2017, we recorded 5007 workers who were injured in the course of their work and we also had 65 fatalities at work.
“As NSSA we are against any injuries or fatalities at work hence we launched the Vision Zero campaign. We will soon be visiting every work-place spreading the message about our campaign.”
NSSA has also established a rehabilitation centre in Bulawayo to cater for those injured at workplaces and for the general public.
“We try by all means to make sure accidents are avoided at workplaces, but for those who are injured or the grossly disabled at work we have opened a rehabilitation centre in Bulawayo,” said Mr Sauro.
