NSSA Employee loses US$17000 to car dealer

A National Social Security Authority employee was allegedly duped of US$12 000 by a Chitungwiza-based businessman and owner of Tatmark Motors in a botched vehicle deal.

Tatenda Makanda (32) appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing two counts of fraud and was released on US$100 bail.

He was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses and to report at Warren Park Police Station.

The complainant is Marry Masocha. It is alleged that sometime in November last year, Godwishes Mazivisa left his motor vehicle a Toyota Axio, and all its documents in the custody of Makanda at Wishtag Motors (Pvt) Ltd car sale at corner Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road and Cumberland Drive in Eastlea, Harare.

Makanda was supposed to keep the car safe and to rent it out. On January 11 this year, Makanda entered into an agreement of sale with Masocha for the sale of Toyota Axio, without the consent and authority of Mazivisa.

The two parties agreed on a purchase price of ZWG$110 000 000, swap and top up with a Toyota Passo.

On January 16, 2024, a payment of ZWG105 783 606,84 was transferred into Masocha’s NBS Bank account and it was further transferred into a CBZ account belonging to Mutamba Paveway Investments.

It is the State’s case that on January 17 this year, Makanda facilitated a change of ownership and he gave Masocha new number plates AGN 4860 and a new registration book for the car.

On May 25, 2024, the Toyota Corolla Axio, was recovered by CID Vehicle Theft Squad Harare and Makanda was charged with theft of motor vehicle.

As a result of Makanda’s actions complainant suffered actual prejudice of US$12 000 and nothing has been recovered.

On a different count Makanda allegedly duped Wellington Iddi in April this year after he sold an unregistered Honda Vezel which belonged to Godwishes Mazivisa without his consent.

It is alleged that on May 4 this year, Makanda entered into an agreement of sale with Iddi for the purchase of a Honda Vezzel through a swap and top with a Toyota Mark without the authority of Mazivisa.

Court documents state that Iddi made a top-up payment of US$5 000 to Makanda however CID VTS Harare came to Iddi’s workplace and recovered the vehicle as it was reported stolen.
